Charities
The 2004 and
2005 Wedding Dress Balls both raised money for the Neuroblastoma
Cancer Society (www.nsoc.co.uk).
This charity is dear to our hearts as our good friend has
a 5 year old daughter, Jennifer Pickering, who's currently being
treated for the disease.
We wanted to continue to
raise funds for Neuroblastoma, but also raise funds for another
very worthwhile cancer charity. This is why we
decided that the 2007 Wedding Dress Ball would support both the Neuroblastoma Cancer Society and Breast Cancer Research
(www.cancerresearchuk.org/breastcancer).
Neuroblastoma is a cancer of specialised nerve cells
called neural crest cells. These cells are involved in the
development of the nervous system and other tissues such as the
adrenal gland.
Neuroblastoma is predominantly a tumour of early childhood; two
thirds of children with neuroblastoma are diagnosed when they
are younger than 5 years of age. It is often present at birth
but usually is not detected until later.
Breast Cancer is the second most
common form of cancer in the UK, with
over 42,000 new cases being diagnosed each year.
Breast
cancer claims the lives of 12,400 women each year in the UK. Men can also
get breast cancer but it is rare (around 300 cases are diagnosed
in the UK each year).
Both of these charities are using money raised by events
such as the Wedding Dress Ball, to fund essential research into
cures and support for those affected.
